Sublimation vs UV Printing on Aluminium Sheets: Which Should You Use?
Sublimation bonds dye into a coating with heat; UV printing cures ink on top with light. Here's how the two aluminium processes compare on quality, speed, durability and cost.
The short answer: sublimation uses heat to bond dye into a polyester coating, while UV printing cures liquid ink on top of the surface with UV light. Sublimation wins for smooth, photo-quality colour and indoor durability; UV printing wins for speed, flexibility and a wider range of finishes. Which you choose depends on the product you're making.
How does each process work?
Sublimation prints your design onto transfer paper, then a heat press at 180–200 °C turns the dye into gas that bonds permanently into the sheet's sublimation coating. The colour becomes part of the surface.
UV printing sends your artwork straight to a flatbed printer that lays UV-curable ink onto a UV printing sheet and hardens it instantly with UV lamps. The ink sits on the surface, which allows texture, white ink and even spot gloss.
